Kharkiv National University is an educational institution which has become not only an example of teaching, but also contributed to establishment of Kharkiv as a scientific and cultural center of Ukraine. Besides, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University also has a historical value, because it is one of the oldest universities of Eastern Europe existing since 1804.
The fact that famous culture and science figures, three Nobel laureates (in Biology, Economics and Physics) were studying and teaching there and about 60 graduates became fellows of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine indicates on high level of acquired theoretical and practical skills, serious approach to personnel selection, knowledge assessment of students and considerable material resources.
In 2003 V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University became an autonomous state educational institution, and in 2010 – a research university.
At the moment V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University combines:
— over 20 world-known schools of sciences;
— 11 councils for defense of a doctoral thesis;
— 5 councils for Ph.D. defense;
— astronomical observatory;
— botanical garden, which is a State Nature Conservation Zone at the moment;
— museusm of nature and archeology;
— central research library, which has been socially significant since 1987.
This university together with a few other Ukrainian higher educational institutions has appeared in the list of best educational institutions of Europe for several times, which strengthened its international ties with other educational and scientific institutions. Besides, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is a co-founder of the Eurasian University Association, and also it is a part of the European Association, World University Association and Association of European Network of Nuclear Education. This university was also one of the leading educational institutions that initiated the Bologna process.
Activities of the university had a huge impact not only on international events and the level of science and education in Ukraine, but also on general tendencies of higher education development in Kharkiv region. For example, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is directly relevant to the establishment of the National Pharmaceutical and Law Academies, Kharkiv Medical, Economics, Pedagogical Universities, Zoo Veterinary Academy, Academy of Culture and other educational institutions.
